Did we just sell our birthright and our liberty for the scanty sum of some free trinkets from the government? Did we just sell Manhattan for a few worthless glass beads? Are Americans so stupid or self-centered that they would sell themselves into slavery for free healthcare, food stamps or government housing?
We are now becoming a nation of slaves begging our illustrious leaders to take from the rich so that we might have more free stuff. We will vote for you, strike for you, riot for you and praise you if only you will give us a few crumbs from your plate.
Do you not remember the story of Esau who sold his birthright for a little meat? If not refresh your memory:
And when they were grown up, Esau became a skillful hunter, and a husbandman, but Jacob a plain man dwelt in tents. And the boys grew. And Esau was a skilful hunter, a man of the field. And Jacob was a quiet man, dwelling in tents. Isaac loved Esau, because he ate of his hunting: and Rebecca loved Jacob. Now Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his venison. And Rebekah loved Jacob. And Jacob boiled Pottage: to whom Esau, coming faint out of the field, And Jacob boiled pottage. And Esau came in from the field, and he was faint. Said: Give me of this red pottage, for I am exceeding faint. For which reason his name was called Edom. And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red [pottage]. For I am faint. Therefore was his name called Edom. And Jacob said to him: Sell me thy first birthright. And Jacob said, Sell me first thy birthright. He answered: Lo I die, what will the first birthright avail me. And Esau said, Behold, I am about to die. And what profit shall the birthright do to me? Jacob said: Swear therefore to me. Esau swore to him, and sold his first birthright. And Jacob said, Swear to me first. And he sware unto him. And he sold his birthright unto Jacob. And so taking bread and the pottage of lentils, he ate, and drank, and went his way; making little account of having sold his first birthright. __Gen. 25:27-34
Esau did not see the value of his birthright and was quick to relinquish it for a morsel of food. We are just as foolish: seeing little use for our freedoms and liberties. Therefore, Esau did not deserve his birthright nor do we deserve ours.
Now all chastisement for the present indeed seemeth not to bring with it joy, but sorrow: but afterwards it will yield, to them that are exercised by it, the most peaceable fruit of justice. All chastening seemeth for the present to be not joyous but grievous; yet afterward it yieldeth peaceable fruit unto them that have been exercised thereby, [even the fruit] of righteousness. Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees, Wherefore lift up the hands that hang down, and the palsied knees; And make straight steps with your feet: that no one, halting, may go out of the way; but rather be healed. and make straight paths for your feet, that that which is lame be not turned out of the way, but rather be healed. Follow peace with all men, and holiness: without which no man shall see God. Follow after peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no man shall see the Lord: Looking diligently, lest any man be wanting to the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up do hinder, and by it many be defiled. looking carefully lest [there be] any man that falleth short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble [you], and thereby the many be defiled; Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau; who for one mess [morsel of meat], sold his first birthright. __Heb. 12:11-16
We will have to bear the consequences of our apathy just as Esau did. At least the author of Hebrews has some sound advice for us while we endure our chastisement. What do you think?
