Failed Ideologies and Heresies

Failed ideologies such as Socialism, Marxism and Communism have much in common with the Heresies that have plagued the Church from the beginning. The similarities don’t surprise me because they share the same Author; the father of all lies[1], the adversary[2], the deceiver of the whole world[3]. Though he disguises himself as “an angel of light”[4], he prowls through the world “seeking the ruin of souls.”[5]

Socialism, Marxism and Communism have the same mark as do the heresies. They do not respect nor do they wish to have Christ or His Church influence their own personal beliefs or inform their ideology for a “better” world. They will decide what is best for the people and the Church will not have a say in the debate. Is it any wonder that all 3 of these modern ideologies are stridently atheistic in their beliefs?

Just as the failed heresies of the past keep changing and reappearing over and over again, so too the failed ideologies of the atheistic left. The introduction of many of the leftist’s ideologies into the Church is just further proof that the Architect is attacking from every front.

In our recent past the Church has fought Liberalism and Modernism as well as a Marxist form of Liberation Theology but they did not go away; they merely went dormant. These ideas are alive and well though they are hiding from the light that the Church shone upon them. Like cockroaches, they will scurry to the surface at any chance they get and try to pass undetected. The analogy is good for these heresies and ideologies are like an infestation of vile and disgusting bugs that are impossible to root out entirely. They always return when you least expect them.

Now to be fair, Satan does not prefer left to right or Democrat or Republican. For he uses the natural repulsion of the conservative and the traditionalist to whip up hatred against the liberals and at times foregoes our responsibility for love of neighbor; creating resentment which results too often in conflicts and unwarranted attacks on some who may merely have been duped by the elites of their movements. Witness the elites on the right who are largely responsible for working out deals with their opponents for mutual gain: the right who will abandon principle for another term in office. All the while the liberal elites fan the flames of racism and division among their followers. Morality and truth, it seems, is only a convenient sound bite that in no way transforms their own lives: the fruits of which are plainly visible on our nightly news broadcasts.

So as we lose the light of the news media to point out the dangers that are facing us in society, we also have silent pastors who have not sounded the warning for the spiritual dangers still lurking in our midst. Where we have differing factions and so much division and confusion, I think that it is evident that the master of Evil is operating at some level. “For where jealousy and faction are, there is confusion and every vile deed.”__ James 3:18

With the elimination of the Oath Against Modernism[6] for the ordained priest and the elimination of the Leonine Prayers after Mass, perhaps it’s time to include at the least the Leonine prayers after Mass. I, for one, will pray them every week on my own (see below). Will you join me?

The Leonine Prayers

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee, blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the Fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Hail Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears. Turn then, most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy towards us. And after this our exile, show unto us the blessed Fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

Pray for us, O holy Mother of God.

That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

O God, our refuge and our strength, look down with favor upon Thy people who cry to Thee; and by the intercession of the glorious and Immaculate Virgin Mary, Mother of God, of St. Joseph her Spouse, of Thy blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and of all the Saints, mercifully and graciously hear the prayers which we pour forth for the conversion of sinners, and for the liberty and exaltation of our holy Mother the Church. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Saint Michael, the Archangel, defend us in battle; be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray: and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust down to hell Satan and all the evil spirits who roam through the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus,

Have Mercy on us.   (say three times)

[5] Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel

[6] Pope, Saint Pius X, on September 1, 1910, mandated that “all clergy, pastors, confessors, preachers, religious superiors, and professors in philosophical-theological seminaries” should swear to it. The oath continued to be taken until July 1967 when the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith rescinded it. I have a link to the document under my tab for Resources.

  1. I agree heresy never disappears. It merely morphs into something appearing to be new thus giving rise to the temptation for people to follow it.

Hate and discontent do not disappear either as they merely morph from one “righteous” cause to another. This, I think, is an infection from the political world by means of left versus right.

When I am asked my political affiliation my reply is “Disciple of Christ.”

When asked about the impact of liberation theology on my views my reply is “Disciple of Christ.”

Not because I seek to avoid debate. Far from it. Instead this reply firmly marks me opposed to any thought or system rejecting Him.

BTW, the Leonine Prayers are wonderful.

  2. You can never go wrong by clinging to Christ; for anything not actively working for, leading to, or glorifying Him is useless. I too, love the Leonine Prayers and wish that they would make a reappearance in our Novus Ordo Mass. They are a strong defense against Modernism and the attacks of Satan upon the Church.
